Hello there

I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me some paper references dealing with panel method solvers for calculating pressure distribution, if possible around a ships hull. Any other seminal paper ref would be helpful.

Thanx

These should help you out.

Hess, J.L., "Panel Methods in Computational Fluid Dynamics", Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics, 1990, Vol. 22, pp 255-274

Katz, J. and Plotkin, A., "Low-Speed Aerodynamics From Wing Theory to Panel Methods", McGraw-Hill Series in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering, 1991, Edition 1.

Hello;

I've found the following to be of use for aero style panel methods.

(1) Katz, J, and Plotkin, A., Low Speed Aerodynamics, McGraw-Hill, 1991.

(2) Hess, J. L., and Smith, A. M. O., Calculation of Potential Flow About Arbitrary Bodies, Progress in Aeronautical Sciences, Volume 8, 196

(3) Maskew, B., Program VSAERO, A Computer Program for Calculating the Non-Linear Aerodynamic Characteristics of Arbitrary Configurations, Theory Document. NASA CR-4023, Sept 1987.

If you're interested in the ugly Green function formulations for handling free surfaces, the following are good:

(1) Zienkiewicz, O. C., Lewis, R. W., and Stagg, K. G. (Eds), Numerical Methods in Offshore Engineering, Wiley, 1978.

(2) Faltinsen, O. M., Sea Loads on Ships and Offshore Structures, Cambridge University Press, 1990.

(3) Newman, J. N., Marine Hydrodynamics, MIT Press, 1977.

(4) Lin, W. M., and Yue, D., "Numerical Solution for Large-Amplitude Ship Motions in the Time Domain", Office of Naval Research, 18th Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics, 1990.

Most rankine panel approaches for free surfaces are based on:

(1) Dawson, C. W., "A Practical Computer Method for Solving Ship-Wave Problems", 2nd International Conference on Numerical Ship Hydrodynamics, 1977.

While the approach has been extended by by countless investigators including:

(1) Maskew, B., "Prediction of Nonlinear Wave/Hull Interactions on Complex Vessels", Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics (around 1990)

(2) Nakos, D., and Sclavounos, P., "Ship Motions by a Three-Dimensional Rankine Panel Method", Office of Naval Research, 18th Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics, 1990.

Several good articles (notably by Sclavounos and Larsson) treating this stuff and other topics related to ship CFD are in the book:

(1) "Advances in Marine Hydrodynamics", Computational Mechanics Publications, 1996.

Good luck. Email me if you have a more specific question.

Regards,

R
