There is a new 1-pg brochure from nvidia on their outlook for machine learning in numerical simulations and has some numbers I found interesting
nvidia Solution Brief According to nvidia's estimate, 200 billion CPU core hrs are spent on some form of physical numerical simulation of which 25 bn are spent on CFD. So 1/8th of compute hrs are used by CFD. Also interesting is that nvidia (a gpu manufacturer) is quoting CPU core hrs, excluding GPU hours. I feel like CFD takes up all my time but the 1/8-th number kinda puts it in into a larger perspective. For every idiot doing CFD, there's 7 more =) Of course, numerical simulations are just a tiny fraction of the global CPU use, most of the usage is probably in the economic sector, processing credit card transactions and streaming netflix in 8K |
