Hi,

Is there any equivalent of OpenFOAM for LBM?

With equivalent I mean:
  • opensource
  • reasonably well documented
  • there are some tutorials online
  • i can execute a full workflow from geometry, meshing, solving and postprocessing
  • well maintained and updated regularly
  • reasonably easy to use for people coming from OpenFOAM
  • it does not require coding for standard cases (mainly incompressible external CFD in my case)

I have found a couple online:
  • OpenLB
  • FluidX3D

But before diving in them I was wondering whether there was a popular one like OpenFOAM.

Thanks!

I think palabos is probably one of the more known / complete ones, though it doesn't tick all the boxes you have asked for. I don't think you will find anything remotely similar to openfoam which focuses just on lbm, unless you remove open source, there are some decent commercial solver availabe (power flow, m-star cfd)

Thanks. A bit too much coding required, but interesting nevertheless.

Hi,

I have tested both FluidX3D and OpenLB and I find OpenLB to be a much more serious project, you have a forum to ask questions, a guide in pdf format where they explain a lot of things, a lot of pre-made examples for different physical cases (with explanations in the pdf I just mentioned), while FluidX3D has only a bunch of examples without any explanation, also the fact that you can export the data from OpenLB to Paraview is extremely useful, in FluidX3D you cannot export any of the calculated data.

Btw, check this link, you'll find a lot of LBM open source codes with a little summary of them (notice FluidX3D is not mentioned there).

Hope it helps!

OpenLB does look promising indeed.

Thank you very much!
