Hello,

I want to study 2D (multi element) airfoils for wing selection for a Formula Student car and also to teach new students about wings and CFD. For this I want to use OpenFOAM, but have problems creating the 2D meshes. I read that snappyHexMesh only meshes in 3D, but I tried to mesh in 2D anyway and had problems with layer addition.

So I am looking for an easy to use Open Source meshing software for multi element wings. Do you have some recommendations? Also is XFLR5 or similar software capable to simulate multi element airfoils?

Greetings
Florian

Hello,

I think XFOIL would be suited to your needs. XFOIL is an interactive program for the design and analysis of subsonic isolated airfoils. Given the coordinates specifying the shape of a 2D airfoil, Reynolds and Mach numbers, XFOIL can calculate the pressure distribution on the airfoil and hence lift and drag characteristics.

Thanks for your answer, but can XFOIL really calculate the pressure around multi elemt airfoils like https://i.imgur.com/1EqdVdN.png? I read that this is not possible with XFOIL.

And how compare the results of simulations with XFOIL or similar software to 2D CFD simulations

gmesh could be used to create 2d meshes.
