Can someone please suggest a good source for learning about how to non-dimensionalize vorticity? I came across the following formula in a scientific paper: ω∗=|ω|Lref/U∞. However I would like to know what the terms Lref and U∞ stand for. In particular for an aerofoil: is Lref = c, where c = chordlength ?

In aerodynamic applications it is common to use the chord length and the freestream velocity for the length and velocity scales, respectively. But of course, these are not the only choices.

For more general understanding, "Fundamentals of aerodynamics" by John Anderson has a nice section of the development of non-dimensional equations via Buckingham-Pi.
