The book by A. J. Chorin and J. E. Marsden "A Mathematical Introduction to Fluid Mechanics" Springer Verlag, 1979 is an excellent intro to vortex methods.

Also there is a new book out by Cottet and Koumoutsakos, which I have personally not read and thus can't make any comments (and/or recommendations). Given Cottet's background, it may be too mathematical for an intro - I don't know.

Of course, journal papers are excellent places as well (check JCP, Math. Comp., SIAM J. Numer. Anal.)

If you are going to do 3-D you can contact Sandia National Labs for the following review of 3D vortex methods (you may actually be able to download it from their web-site):

A. Gharakhani, "A Survey of Grid-Free Methods for the Simulation of 3-D Incompressible Flows in Bounded Domains," SAND97-2256, Contractor Report

Hi,

The book of Cottet and Koumoutsakos, already quoted by Adrin, "Vortex methods: theory and applications" is complete and interesting without being too much abstract. A version without picture is downloadable at: http://www.ifd.mavt.ethz.ch/class/pe...ter99/par.html

Other interesting sites with downloadable stuff are: http://www.emath.fr/Maths/Proc/Vol.1/contents.htm http://www.emath.fr/Maths/Proc/Vol.7/contents.htm http://www.lmc.imag.fr/lmc-edp/Georg...et/vortex.html
