Commercial package for studying particle motion in aerodynamic lenses and nozzle expansions?

Dear all,
Would anyone be able to recommend one or two of the countless available commercial CFD packages for the purpose of studying particle motion in aerodynamic lenses (a series of axisymmetric contractions and enlargements) and nozzle expansions? The main factors affecting the minimum beam width are Brownian motion and lift force. The theoretical situation is described in Liu et al., Aerosol Science and Technology, 22, 293-313, 1995. Many thanks, Susan McCaffery |

your problem description isn't very good. but i guess you could use almost any commercial code for that. try www.cfdrc.com their stuff is cool

I apologize for the problem description not being very good - this is my first-time using an online discussion forum and I was unsure how much detail to post. Since there has now been some interest, here is a little more detail:
The set-up consists of a narrow, metal, cylindrical tube of about 8cm in length and 0.5cm outside diameter. Inside the tube are several orifices, positioned in the plane of cross-section of the cylinder, of diameter about 0.2cm and at spacings of about 1cm. At one end of the tube, a particle-laden gas (particle diameter of zero to order (1) microns) is injected, and at the other end, there is a nozzle leading to an evacuation chamber. I am looking for a relatively low-cost commercial CFD package that is suited to this problem, in particular being capable of aerosol tracking. Thanks, Susan |

i don't know about low cost but most commercial packages should be able to simulate this kind of flow relatively easily. if you want to reduce costs you can check out some codes available through NASA and DOE labs (see www.capella.colorado.edu/~laney for links to several of these codes) you can thenask if their codes are suitable.

Try Innovative Research Inc. at http://www.inres.com This company was founded by Suhas V. Patankar and they have quality CFD software at a reasonable cost. I can give you their phone number if you cannot find it.
