Is there any effect of type of bicycle rim on the behaviour of flow around it?

I think so. At higher speeds the turbulence and increased aerodynamic losses around the spokes seem to be not negligible any more. Aerodynamically most perfect is a closed wheel, but this is only applicable for indoor races, because only here you don't encounter any cross-winds.
