Default Design Process: Turbine Inverse of Pump?

Hey everyone,

Perhaps a silly question, but can anyone confirm that the design process is similar between a pump and a turbine?

I've been using CfTurbo's axial pump design flow. I've entered in my desired operating RPM, head, and other parameters. It creates a very nice looking set of pump blades via some meanline calculations. If I simply pump water in at the mass flow rate, can I expect the same response curve?

They do have a turbine design flow, however, it seems to only support gases. There is no option for water and it seems to want to work with compressible flow only. I tried to enter in parameters for water, but it wants to know the ideal gas behaviours, etc.

Any insight from the experts?

thanks! -

Stephen

Hi,
yes the pump work roughly fine also in turbine mode, the major problem will be the impeller trailing edge that will effect the efficiency and the QH curve, lowering the value for both.
then often when you design directly a pump thinking for a reverse operation, you will obtain something that will work so and so in both the behaviours.
