Dear All,

I will be using Comsol Multi-physics or Adina to simulate Fluid-structure Interactions (strongly coupled) and I will start with a 2D-3D Karman street simulation (probably turbulent later). Then continue with an elastic fiber Fluid-structure Interactions simulations.

I have got an offer which is:

1 x CELSIUS R650

2 x Quad-Core Xeon X5460 3.16GHz 2x6MB 1333

4 x 4GB FB-DIMM PC2-5300 ECC (2x 2GB)

1 x NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 1.5GB

1 x Second NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 1.5GB

3 x HDD SAS 300GB 15k

1 x HDD SATA II 750GB 7.2k business-critical

[Around 6,500 Euro]

Is this a good workstation to simulate such systems? (fsi scales are 1cm x 5cm x 40cm)

Do you recommend a better system than this?

Eagerly looking forward to your responses.

Is dual graphics-card really needed?

Can you utilize all cores with Comsol or Adina?

Hi F.P.,

Comsol can use multi-core since version 3.4. Adina I don't know yet (trial cds on the way)

Graphic cards will be used for another 3D visualization software called Imaris (for another college)

Cheers Danial

The system will be much too noisy if you want to have it in the same room. Wrong HDDs and wrong graphics.
