DES, LES and DNS applications

Hello everyone,
I'm an undergrad university student currently researching for an essay on CFD turbulence models and applications and I would like to know what are the main differences between the three methods (DNS, DES and LES) and also what domains do they apply to (i.e. automotive, marine, gas kinetic etc...)? Any Help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much! James M |

thanks for the link, very helpful indeed. However, it does not indicate what fields do they apply to. Are LES and DES more used in flow over airfoil and general aerospace and automotive industry, or do they apply to other fields like marine, physics, combustion etc...?

Hi,
LES is now commonly encountered in combustion, at least in laboratory, mainly because it give access to the (coarse) structure of the flame front, therefore making the combustion modeling easier (less assumptions based on pdf, ...). It is also used in astrophysics and I remember a seminar talk by Oran dealing with some marine problems. DES studies are more focused on aerospace and automotive topics presumably because: - it's a rather young turbulent modeling (less than 10 years) coming from the aerospace field: it needs time to widespread - it is well-suited for massively separated flow commonly encountered in these industries. It is worth noting that LES and, to some extent, DES, are not that common in industry because of the huge computational resources that are required. Moreover very well-trained scientists are still required to run them adequately (they are far from being fire-and-forget methods yet). Regards Lionel |
