Simple question, but big answer. CFD is the numerical investigation of fluid dynamics. Any kinds of numerical analysis using computer can be categorised as CFD.

For more information, please refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computa...fluid_dynamics

not all numerical sims are CFD. Finite element method is used for solid mechanics.

CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is a method to simulate fluid dynamics. It solves the Navier Stokes (viscous) or Euler (inviscid) equations using an iteration process because the Navier Stokes equations have not yet been solved. Was told by my mate there's a 1million pound/dollar prize but dont know if he was talking shit!

Most common CFD method is finite volume where a large volume is split into lots of little volumes and theres lots and lots of gigabytes of equations all plugged through the computer as iterations(guesses) until it gets a result of what would happen in that situation in real life.
