I am working for a UK based large CFD company for many years and we always have had Christmas bonus since my joining. However this year we were told that the company can't afford bonus anymore, which is annoying since the living cost in London goes up all the times.
How is the pay in other companies in UK or USA with CFD-related jobs? |

I have a funny feeling I work for the same company as you and I feel exactly the same (and even if I don't I am in the same position working in london etc). It would be interesting to know how much other UK based CFD engineers earn (anonymously of course) as I too feel that I can no longer afford to work in london on the wage I am paid. It's going to be a lean christmas and indeed I am increadibly disapointed and wondering if I might not be better served working somewhere else.

Pray to the Almighty. I am sure you know what "off shoring" does mean, OK, PhD's doing your job for $1/hr (Yes one dollar) So lean christmas is better than none and in your prayers ask the Almighty to erase this word from the minds of whoever is subcontracting you firm. Good luck Happy and prosperous new year to all

There are other CFD vendor companies in London that are still paying bonuses. I work for one. Why don't you jump ship?

LOL.... I think we have sighted greener grass.
The problem with grass that looks greener on the other side of the fence is... a) to some people green seems greener than to others... b) once you get close enough to get an accurate picture, the green suddenly seems to fade... c) that's when you realize it wasn't all that bad where you came from. |

Hey UK Guys...
Listen one thing.. better change your jobs preferably to non-CFD ones.... your count down days have started as CFD picks up in Indian universities & markets.. sooner or later all CFD jobs will move to India.. so be prepared sooner or later we are going to hump you. Everyone in the know knows that CFD development competence linearly decreases from somewhere near Spaldings house, going east, ending up with some comically abysmal tools from the far east.
Rumour has it that in 8-10 years Indian dev wont be cheap anymore, my bet's on a burgeoning Kazakhstan market replacing it; Aii. |

OK, but why don't you give a chance to the Phd students? All you with the CDF-jobs you get paid very well, why you complain? Think and the CDF-students that they do the same thing with you and they get nothing actually. For example my annual "salary" is about 3000 euro........(Phd student-CFD developer).... Life is more than salaries and getting christmas gifts...you have a life, which is more tham CFD... Nevermind, don't accuse the Phd students, they are not happy with the whole thing (concerning their salary), but at least they like what they do...

Most if not all CFD developers started out as PhD students, regardless of where in the world. Most successful career paths don't start out with whining and moaning though. And don't think for a minute that having been recently introduced to a subject gives you exclusive rights to enjoyment. Work hard, impress others, crank the handle and just get on with it. Don't wait for life to pay you back, it wont, regardless of your purity in belief of a numerical science.

Not necessarily, just be warned that if you end up working for a small private company effectively run as a egotist's personal fiefdom, said egotist may fritter away the company's cash on ill-advised acquisitions, over-paid senior managers and unproductive development groups. Such problems aren't limited to the CFD industry though.
