I am working with KIVA code right now. In the code, the space discretization algorithm is using common cartesian coordinate system (xyz) while KIVA code is mainly used in cyilindrical object such as engine cylinder. Is there anyone who can share their perspectives in this difference of coordinate system?

cylindrical coordinates are useful when the flow is cilindrical. In that case you can use a 2D-axisymmetric approximation and solve a 3d problem using a 2d approach. In this way you can save the number of grid-points and obvoiusly the cpu-time
