As I know, penalty method is old and has been mainly used for steady flows.

How does it sound to use it for practical unsteady flows? What will be the advantages and disadvantages?

Maybe not many people are familar with penalty methods.

So, great thanks for any comments and references as you have!

Penalty method can be used for tranmsient simulation. I suggest following three papers. I am no expert in CFD but very much interested in CFD techniques which do not use meshes or uses simple rectangular grid. I am aware of following three papers on the subject:

Angot P., Bruneau C.-H., Fabrie P., A penalization method to take into account obstacles in viscous flows, Numer. Math. 81 (1999) 497â€"520.

Kai Schneider Numerical simulation of the transient flow behaviour in chemical reactors using a penalisation method Computers & Fluids 34 (2005) 1223â€"1238.

K. Schneider. M. Farge Numerical simulation of the transient flow behaviour in tube bundles using a volume penalization method Journal of Fluids and Structures 20 (2005) 555â€"566
