Hey,

Has anyone experienced problems with mpi and dual-core processors? Are there any potential pitfalls, such as addressing the memory correctly?

Regards

I use dual cores but I would recomend that if you can afford it to get 2 single cores of similar speed. Dual cores are fine for checking your mail whilst browsing the internet at the same time but for memory intensive apps the fact that you only have one controller per chip (which is serving two cores) means that you can get a bit of a backlog when each core is accessing heaps of memory. Obviously before long you won't have a choice (AMD are only making one model of single core opteron now) so if you do go for a dual core, get an opteron as the intel ones are pants by all accounts (as per usual AMD invented the technology and intel are playing catch up same as 64 cpus)

I havent bumped into any mpi issues though as the memory adressing is all done onboard, i happen to be running a simulation on one of my dual core chips at the mo, or should that read two of my 4 cores......

I have used AMD Athlon CPUs as SMP tandems years ago, but now I lost track: Is that still possible with any AMD architecture other than the expensive opteron? Are there any SMP motherboards available, besides the ones for opterons?

Thanks Ben,

Nice to hear. Dual Core it is then.

About the struggle of the titans; woodcrest seems really nice. Might tip the tide in favour of the blue guys
