Default steady turbulence modeling

hi all,

i have a very basic question about using turbulence models with steady solvers: how does switching to RANS equations -for instance- affects the steady solution in a barely turbulent system, so that it is more probable to end up with a solution?

more clearly stating, how is averaging used to eliminate the effects of fluctuations in a time-independent system? is some kind of spatial averaging used?

thanks.
