I agree although, more expensive CPUs can yield a nice price/performance ratio. However, in order to compare vs higher performing CPUs I guess total cost is more appropriate since low end CPUs need much more peripherals per CPU compared to a high end system (e.g. where we can fit 4 CPUs on one motherboard). To be frank, I have not benchmarked Beowulf clusters against a single expensive workstation in more than 10 years. 10 years ago it was competitive though. How do you think an infiniband cluster with the following would compare to the dual Xeon gold? 12 x Ryzen 7 1700 (overclocked to 3.5 GHz) 16 GB 3200 RAM or 5 x Threadripper 1950X 32 GB 3200 RAM or 10 x Core i5 7600K 16 GB 3200 RAM It is approximately the same cost, assuming the infiniband is purchased at eBay. Not CFD, but it gives some indication of value: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_value_available.html |

If you are solving small systems then I'd go with:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/j9MBwV If you accept a very basic graphics card then go with the more powerful CPU option: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VDY4yf Or the best price to core ratio (only $780, so you can pick better cooling if you wish to overclock, or a better graphics card if you plan to play as well): https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6b3qcc |

None of the builds you quoted is a really good use of your money when you are on a tight budget.
I would suggest you start your own thread (since it seems to be a completely different price range) and clearly state what you need and how much you want to spend. To answer your question: in my opinion 2GB of VRAM is the absolute minimum if you spend money on a dedicated graphics card these days. That would be for example a GT 1030. Stay away from low-end graphics cards like the GT 710, they are slower than most integrated GPUs in modern CPUs and thus a waste of money. |
