Hi everyone!

I have to buy a machine, and following the advices given to Hajart, as well as what was available from the retailer for the university I work in, that's my list:

Motherboad: Asus X99-A II
CPU: INTEL I7-6900k – boxed
Graphic card: ASUS NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 - 6Gb
RAM: 64GB - 4 modules 16GB DDR4-3200 g-skill (compatible with x99-a)
HD: SSD Samsung MZ-75E250B SSD 850 EVO, 250 GB, 2.5" SATA III
HD: WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR RED 4TB WD40EFRX SATAIII
CABINET: Fractal Design Define R5
Power supply: CORSAIR RM650X ATX 80+ GOLD FAN 135MM
CPU Fan BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 3

I will mainly use it for performing simulations on OpenFoam, with maximum 7 million cells, using RANS and LES model (so many time steps)
but I will use it also as a general purpose pc.
I can use also a powerful workstation for bigger cases but I would like to have the chance to perform perform this kind of simulation in this new pc.
I can afford this configuration or something similar but I cannot spend much more, can you give me an advice?
Am I forgetting something in the list?
64GB will be fine?

Thanks in advance!!!

Looks great.
I'm not sure if you need that much graphic card.
I don't know that the case is ATX or E-ATX, but I think you should select E-ATX form factor case for the future that is compatible with Asus x99 A-II.

Thanks a lot!!
Do you mean that in case I should change Asus x99 AII in the future it would be better to have another case (an E-ATX one)?
Sorry but I am not an expert at al, and I don't know if I have understood correctly !!

No,

If you get an E-ATX case NOW, it will be good for the future.

In the future, may be cases will be larger than E-ATX, and an E-ATX form will only be "OK" on that time.

Your system is good i think. E-ATX form is not a must.

Don't forget to adjust the uncore frequency. It is what drives the CPU cache and memory controller. The default value is pretty low for Haswell-E processors.

Hi,

maybe a trivial question, but is there a web site where you can "configure" your workstation according to general criteria as e.g. applications, price, cores, ecc ecc?

I think that for people like me that have not to deal with this topic every day, it could be of help to filter out informations and to focus on few configurations.

Thanks for helping.

I think https://www.pugetsystems.com/ is as close as it gets to what you are searching for.
