hi, I'm making new desktop pc to do cfd simulations and for working after I've finished my bachelor study.

softwares that I'm using:
Solidworks Flow Simulations
ANSYS
Star CCM+
Autodesk

(all majoring in Flow Simulation)

my friend suggested these specs (with USD800++ budget):

i5 4th gen..
nvidia gtx960 ddr5 2gb..
8gb ram..
1tb harddisk..
cooler master 212x..
b85 pro gaming motherboard..

but hes still unsure about the motherboard..
and I'm concerned whether the cooling system can support the heavy long run simulations..

can you guys suggest these crucial specs?

crucial would be the number of CPU cores (without HT) - and you also need the licenses for that number.
In case you have an academic CFX license, you get 8 HPC licenses, AFAIK.

Are you planning to do transient simulations? How big/detailed will your meshes be?

It all comes down to money. USD 800 is a start but for a professional desktop, you need like USD 5000...

My desktop has 2 Xeons with 4 cores each, 128 GB RAM, Nvidia quadro card, 256 GB SSD for the software and 8 TB local storage plus more in a NAS.
My transient problems still take days...

with your mentioned setup, I would add another 8 GB RAM and an SSD for the OS and softwares. I assume you mean a i5 4 core CPU?
