My Fluent installation runs fine on Win7 x64, but I get the following problem when i try to start Gambit, after first launching exceed. I've tried the usual things like disabling firewall --- any ideals what might be causing this ? Many thanks.
"Locating Exceed installation ... gambit failed in locating Exceed installation on your system. Please try to start Exceed manually before you run gambit. Starting C:\Fluent.Inc\gambit2.3.16\ntx86\gambit.exe -device open -id default_id2012 -new ... Gambit build SP2006032921. I am not really sure of Windows 7. However, it only means that Exceed is not installed at the location where Gambit expects it to be. So, just reinstall Exceed and make sure you do not alter it's location of installation. If it is installed at default location, then may be the version is not right for Windows 7. Fluent does not need X-server, therefore, runs properly.

Thanks for responses. I got the free VMWare player (what a great piece of software www.vmware.com), installed a winXP 32 virtual machine, then installed Gambit on on the virtual machine and it works fine (eventually). By sharing the directory location, the meshed gambit files in the XP virtual machine can be accessed from outside, by Fluent running in Win7 ... cool.

Start VMWare Player, click "File / Create a New Virtual machine"
Insert your Win XP installation CD, then select "Installer disc" and install from there. You'll probably have to activate the Win XP installation (i did mine by phone). |

Check that your firewall is disabled.

I've got Win7 64 also, Fluent works fine on it. For Gambit, I didn't use Win XP mode, but used VMWare player instead, installed a Win XP 32 virtual machine, and installed Hummingbird Exceed and Gambit on the virtual machine. As long as the firewall on the virtual machine is disabled, it works fine.

I suggest you get a copy of "VMWare Player" ... see www.vmware.com/products/player/
It's free! When you've installed it, you can then install a Win XP system as a "virtual" PC within your Win7 64 machine. You'll need a Win XP installation CD to do so. When XP is installed, then install Exceed, Gambit, disable firewall ... and you should be good to go. |

Okay, here's how you run Gambit 2.3.16 on Windows 7 64 bit with Exceed 2006 (V11). I know, I didn't think it could be done either so no need for Windows XP emulators anymore. Surprisingly it's an extremely obvious and simple solution!
1) Go to Hummingbird Exceed in start menu and start Exceed manually. 2) Go to Fluent in Start menu and start Gambit 3) A gambit start menu will appear 4) The menu defaults to c:\windows\system.. but this is wrong 5) Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Hummingbird\Connectivity\11.00\Exceed 6) Click 'OK' and hey presto, Gambit starts perfectly! No reason why this wouldn't work for any other version of Exceed as well so long as you point the Gambit install to the correct Exceed folder. |

I would like to recommend you to install both Gambit version 2.3.16 and 2.4.6 You also should have Exceed 2006 in order to run it. - First install exceed (as administrator)and the license then restart your pc - then install Gambit 2.3.16(as administrator) and set up your license - install gambit 2.4.6 (as administrator) and try to run it. - if it does not work, try to start exceed first manually and then run gambit 2.4.6 -close the running programs and try to launch gambit 2.3.16. Now the program must be running. if not be sure that you copy the content of your license file into the "license.dat" file which was created from the license set up. hope this helps you

Anybody can tell me what is Exceed11 used for? I am new in CFD. I know (correct me if I am wrong) Gambit is probably for geometry and Fluent for solving and meshing but what is Exceed for?
