Hi everybody,
I had a question about doing a simulation with help of VBM on a 2-bladed horizontal axis turbine. The mesh that I am working is a horizontal axis turbine in compare with the tutorial example, that I had from FLUENT company, in which it has a vertical axis rotor of a helicopter in its mesh. My problem is at the very last step of defining the case in FLUENT. When I put all my information in the "Rotor Inputs" panel, after clicking on change/creat to save the changes, by clicking on OK button I will get the fallowing error: ================================================== =================== 1000000 ERROR: Cell ID not determined 1000000 allocate_memory /usr/local/Fluent.Inc/fluent6.3.26/Inamd64/3d/fluent.6.3.26[0xdd6fcb] /usr/local/Fluent.Inc/fluent6.3.26/Inamd64/3d/fluent.6.3.26[0xdd6f21] /lib64/libpthread.so.0[0x3de400e4c0] libudf/inam64/3d/libudf.so(allocate_memory+0x6a9)[0x2ad5ac63ef5b] Error: fluent.6.3.26 received a fatal signal (SEGMENTATION VIOLATION) Error Object: #f ================================================== =================== I am pretty sure that my settings have no problem, as long as I am able to run the simulation for the tutorial example. My idea is that I am doing something wrong, or should have something in my mesh. Because based on the above error, FLUENT can not recognize my rotor zone. Thank you for your time and consideration and I am looking forward for your helps and answers. With regards Teymour Javaherchi |

The tutorial is not available on the web. We got it from FLUENT. You should contact them directly and request for the tutorials and the UDF's for the VBM (Note that the files are big and can't be sent via Email and you will receive it on a CD from FLUENT). Provide me an Email address and I can send you the tutorial PDF, so that in mean while you can read about it. I hope that this was helpful. Good luck with you design! |

Dear all,
After posting this post I received lot of CMs about sending the tutorials and files for VBM, but unfortunately I won't be able to do this for every single of you and I gave it up after sending it to very two requests. I advised you guys to contact FLUENT under aca-support@fluent.com and request the tutorials and related files from them. It is part of their customer service and support to respond you and send the required files to you. Please don't send me your Email to get those files. I wish all of you best of luck with your projects and research. With regards -teymourj |

Hey,
VBM UDF can be provided via the company that provides you FLUENT licences. Simply ask them and tell them the version of FLUENT that you are working with and they will send everything for you. Best, Teymour |

All of our previously developed RANS simulations (including VBM) are now publicly available here:
https://mhkdr.openei.org/submissions/all Take advantage of them and cite us |

The data has been submitted few days ago. Allow some time for being process and checked. It should be available for public access soon .
I can not provide you the UDFs and case studies directly. Sorry about that! |

hi teymourj, encountered the same problem with you,I want to know how you can solve this problem? I guess it should be a grid problem.
I tried out the grid many times and not succeeded. The grid needs to meet some certain conditions, maybe, but i don't know. can you give me some hint? error: 1000000 sum_icell_f = 6658, sum_icell_c0 = 610635, sum_icell_c1 = 20050 1000000 ERROR: Cell ID not determined 1000000 allocate_memory Error: received a fatal signal (Segmentation fault). Error: received a fatal signal (Segmentation fault). Error Object: #f thanks. Last edited by blgypeng; June 29, 2016 at 02:27. |

blgypeng,
It's been a while since I have resolved this error. Here is some tips for you: 1-Make sure in your mesh you have an full 360 unit circular face as the rot_face. 2-When meshing it make sure to mesh it separately and standalone as a face and mesh the rest of the volume based on that. 3-When entering the information on the VBM panel make sure to use very accurate data for sizes and position of the origin (i.e. take them from your mesher). 4-Eneter the blade section information one-by-one and hit change/create bottom and OK every time. These should minimize your issues with VBM. Most of the time setting up the VBM model for the first time comes with many crashes and mistakes. It happens to everyone. Good luck! |

teymourj,
thank you for your quick response.I tried to do what you said, and made a test used a structure grid and succeeded.Prior to this, I used unstructured meshes, and the thickness of rotor fluid cell zone is not a layer,i guess this is a reasion the mesh not work. Anyway,i will try to use the structural grid to complete the windfarm simulation. Thank you very much. And now,i have a another problem, about the VBM model parallel computing.Do not know if you have used parallel.I just want to know the VBM model UDF can be compiled in parallel? Thank you very much.Best. |

Dear all,
Due to a high volume of contact about VBM and it's implementation for simulation of horizontal axis wind and tidal turbines and after some in-depth investigation I have found the proper sharing route of our methodology development and VBM UDF files. Users can find the step-by-step methodological tutorial for implementation of VBM to model a horizontal axis wind turbine here: http://nbviewer.jupyter.org/github/s...t/README.ipynb As mentioned in one section of the tutorials all the required VBM UDF files compatible on version 14.0 and above can be downloaded from our github page at: https://github.com/sfo-project/3D-fl...t/README.ipynb Please feel free to check out our other tutorials for fundamental (Tier I) and complex (Tier II) implemented in Star CCM+, FLUENT and Open-foam (SFO-project) here at the SFO-project page: http://faculty.washington.edu/teymourj/sfo-project.html If you had a case study that wanted to add to our archive, we will be more than happy to help you do that under your name. The SFO-project team will help you and teach you how to do this process. Let me know if you needed any more information on VBM. Last edited by teymourj; July 25, 2016 at 19:56. |
