How to set convergence not using residuals

Was wondering is there any way to set convergence criteria other than the level of the residuals. For example would it be possible to set it such that it simulation would move on to next time step when the pressure over a surface reaches a certain level or is only fluctuating by a small ammount. I haven't seen any options for this is GUI so would imagine would require a UDF, has anyone ever tried something like this, is it possible to have a UDF give the command to increase timestep. Also simulations are being carried out on a remote machine so isn't possible to observe output in order to check levels. Any help would be appreciated.
