Particle tracks post processing?

Default Particle tracks post processing?

I was wondering if anyone can explain to me what you see when you view the particle tracks of an injection created from a surface. Specifically, I am confused about the stretching and shrinking of the particles as they move. What does this represent? Any information about this would be helpful.
