Default Opening a mesh file in gambit

Hi,

I have a geometry which was meshed partly in Gambit and then reflected onto TGrid to mesh the remaining half, since the geometry is cylindrical. The whole file now exists with the extension .msh.gz

I now want to make some modifications in the mesh and make it coarser. I tried to open the file in Gambit, but somehow or other, it just refuses to open. However, it opens up in TGrid. Since no modifications can be done on TGrid, I need to open the file in Gambit.

Can someone tell me how to do this?

Thanks, Vidya

Hi vidya,

Iam not sure of what iam suggesting here.Just give it a shot.

.gz extension looks like it might be a zip file.iam not sure weather gambit can unzip and read it.

Try to unzip it with a normal winzip program and try opening it in gambit.

Regards

Rajit

Hi Vidya,

Sorry about the previous mail.

Try writing a gambit neutral file in T-grid and open it in Gambit.

Hi Vidaya,

I presume your problem was importing the mesh file into gambit.

You have two options 1.Try to create a file in Tgrid with .neu extension and import dat into gambit.

2.Do a file-import-mesh-change the settings to fluent/uns in the options and then select your file with .msh.gz extension. it should work.

Good luck!!

Hi Rajit,

I followed the 2nd option that you suggested, but used Fluent 5/6 (that's what we have), but it still doesn't open.

How do I save a file with .neu extension in TGrid?

Thanks, Vidya

Hi vidya,

Do you have a FTP address, which i can access. I want to try it out here.

If it is a .msh file it shud open.

In T-grid there is an option while saving the mesh file as a Gambit file. That is .neu file.

Try this.

Good luck!!

Rajit

Hi Rajit,

I'm using the computers at school. So I do'nt have a particular FTP address.

I tried to save the file as .neu in TGrid, but there was no such option there.

This is what I did- File- Write- Mesh- then saved the mesh with a name. But I didn't see any option for creating a file with .neu extension.

Can you please explain how that's done.

Thanks, Vidya

1. I assume u can open file in fluent. Save the file as case file

2. then in gambit . go to import >fluent > 3d

It should work

Hi Sam,

I tried what you said, but unfortunately it didn't work. It's strange that it opens up in Fluent and Tgrid, but not in Gambit.

Also, I'm running a complex simulation using that meshed file and it's working fine. I wonder why I'm still unable to open it in Gambit.

Hi Sam,

Sorry, it didn't work again. This is what I dis:

1. Imported the .msh.gz file into Fluent.

2. Saved the case file.

3. Fired up Gambit and tried to read the Fluent file.

Then it showed me an error in reading the header.

Did I go wrong somewhere?

Thanks.

I don't think Gambit can read a .gz extension

Thats one point, second is, if the mesh has some errors gambit will just hang there. So before you export the mesh in cas format, please do the check mesh. If the check mesh comes out okey. I would do this, take that cas file, (lets say fluent.cas), I would use the utility to translate it to msh:

utility fe2ram -d3 -tRAMPANT -oRAMPANT fluent.cas > gambit.msh

This will give you gambit.msh, import this into gambit. Shall work. (I know its long method to do it, but seeing your probs this might work).

what I wrote is a console command, just open the console and write utility (to check whether you can run it or not), if you can, just try the command I wrote.
