Can someone please explain to me what the reference values "area" and "length " is for ? thanks

These reference values are not used during calculation, but only for some post-processing tasks. E.g. calculating a drag-coefficient, requires a reference area. Or if you ask Fluent to report on surface heat transfer coefficients, he uses the reference-temperature.

hi wat lika mentioned is correct if you are interested flow past problems and calculating coefficients like LIFT AND DRAG skin friction...... you should worry about reference area i think for 3D you can get it from projected area option bye
