Default compression of dat files

HI!

I have a problem with enormous quantity of .dat files - I'm doing an unsteady simulation, and each .dat file is about 50 Mb big. So I'm facing a problem of saving them (about 100 to 200) to cd or dvd. Is there any way (and how good is it) to compress dat files (like zip - does it work good - what's the compression ratio)? Or do I have to burn 10 cd-s or 2 dvd-s?

Thanks for your replies.

I just did a trial with a 23 MB dat file and it has been compressed in a zip file of about 18 MB.

Maybe a bigger file can be compressed a bit more, but I don't think a lot.

Hi

When saving the data files in:

file>autosave

append .gz onto the end of the filename

You can do this for both case and data files, and the result is that fluent will compress the file when it saves it, using gzip.

You can also do this when saving files in

file>write case

or

file>write case and data

This can be done on both unix and windows machines, but for windows, make sure that in your directory and filename, there are no spaces.

Have a go with WinRar you can get better compression ratio's than with winzip.
