Default DPM or dense discrete phase model?

Hello,

I want to simulate the powder particles that are being injected into a chamber with hot gas flow. The volume fraction of particles is much less than the gas (definitely less than 10%, which means that I can use just the DPM).

Because there will be mass and heat transfer between powder particles and gas flow, I am not sure whether I should use just the discrete phase model alone (multiphase off), OR I should use the multiphase model and enable the dense discrete phase model.

I appreciate it if anyone could answer this question.

Thanks!

The dense discrete phase model (DDPM) only accounts for the particle-particle stresses. This is generally done via the KTGF and formulation for the granular temperature. In other words, DDPM has little to do with mass and heat transfer phenomena. Only accounts for forces and kinematic features.

Certainly if your volume fraction is < 10%, DPM can do the job. The heat and mass transfer features are available. Also is computationally cheaper.
