Hello everyone,
Is there a possibility in Ansys to couple two transient Fluent simulations together?

My problem involves two fluid zones.

- one where no mass flow occurs but it changes phase from liquid to solid as it discharges heat

- one with pipe flow

The flow solution of the fluid zone with phase change affects the solution of pipe flow. If I solve the two zones as two individual problems, I am getting good results. Can report definitions be exchanged between two Fluent instances at each time step?

On another forum, someone mentioned it's possible but did not explain how. Has anyone done it before?

Thanks so much!

if you got good results, why are you trying to make your life complicated?

I don't know any specific software or method.
For v22 you may run fluent using python script and organize information exchange inside script
for older verios you may use matlab (for instance) and run fluent as server (fluent aas)

Hi Alexander,

Thanks for the reply!

By good results, I meant that the solution looked physical but the problem I wish to simulate needs them to work together. I wish I could just define a constant heat flux as BC in two separate simulations, but that's not the objective. The heat flux from the fluid zone with phase change is dependent on the mass flow rate in the pipe flow zone. And similarly the flow in the pipe is affected by the heat flux from the other fluid zone (temperature dependent fluid properties).

I still think my definition of the problem could be the problem. Here's another thread I posted about this model.

Transient heat discharge from Phase change material : Solution strategies

Please let me know if you think there's a better way to do this.

I am trying to do something similar between two moving bodies. I did not get to this part yet but my plan is to write a udf to exchange information between wall conditions in the same simulation with two independent zones being calculated.
