Default Periodic boundary condition on coil flow

Hi there,

I have encountered a problem when simulating flow through a coil. The coil is quite long and to reduce computational power I would like to simply model one coil revolution and apply periodic boundary conditions with a specified mass flow rate.

This approach works fine for a straight tube or pipe, but with a coil, where the flow direction is not parallel to the translation vector, I can not get a proper solution. The fluid is water and I am using k-w SST with the coupled solver.

Under boundary conditions -> periodic conditions I specify the mass flow and flow direction. With the flow direction parallel to the actual direction of the flow, the resulting velocity field is not as expected (checked by simulating multiple revolutions). With the flow direction parallel to the translation vector, the model gives me an error and stops.

I hope there is a way around this behavior.

Thanks in advance.

According to ANSYS support, it is not possible to use the periodic boundary condition for this type of geometry.

thank you for sharing,
which approach did you finally used to simulate this case?

At this point I have to simulate more coil revolutions, export the outlet velocity profile, translate the geometry and apply the profile at the inlet.

I am investigating whether this approach is possible with an UDF though.
