Default dynamic mesh , node movement direction for erosion case

Dear All
in the case of application for dynamic mesh for erosion case whereby the mesh will deform based on the erosion rate
i have a question on how to decide on the direction of the node movement i.e the angle that the node should move along
if there is any sketch or reference will be good too
