What advantages does Ansys Fluent's Macroscopic Particle Model (MPM) have over the Discrete Element Method (DEM) option available in Star CCM when it comes to modelling multiphase flow problems containing large super-grid particles? I understand that DEM allows for the deformation of particles to be accounted for whereas MPM only allows rigid bodies to be modelled. Is MPM just less computationally intense (I'm assuming this is the case)? Or are there other ways it is superior?
