Finally I found what was going on in my simulation!
Since the transport of properties is transmitted normal to the elements faces, the triangular elements in the shockwave region tend to disperse the solution in a manner that makes the solver unstable. By switching to a structured mesh, this issue is not fully fixed but the "false diffusssion" of quad elements alligned with the geometry and thus with the flow is much much smaller. I have created a structured mesh (see the attached images) and my simulation now converges without major issues! |
