To simulate the heat transfer for fluid flow in a tube, is a 3-D mesh required or would a 2-D mesh do?

If you have a simple circular pipe with uni-directional velocity profile, you can easily implement a 2-D geometry with "axis" B.C. type instead of a 3-D case.

hi
it is also dependent to your b.c geometry ...
for example for conjugate heat transfer(conduction+convection) is SHOULD be 3.d since in 2.d there is not the b.c ''shell conduction'' in fluent.

If your flow is axisymmetric, then you can model the flow as 2 D
