Species mass transfer model clarification

I'm a bit confused about the "species mass transfer" model for multiphase flows. I could not find specific information about how this mass transfer mechanism works in the theory guide/user guide.
For example: - What is/are the governing equation(s) for this mechanism? - Is it used to model Fickian diffusion, or phase change (or both)? - What does the "interphase mass transfer coefficient" do, and how is it calculated? - What happens if interphase mass transfer coefficient is set to zero?
