Cylinder impact on water using VOF

Hello, I'm trying to simulate a 2D cylinder impacting on calm water surface under the effect of gravity.
My setup includes a dynamic mesh which seems to be working properly and the mutiphase VOF model to introduce liquid water on the bottom of my fluid domain. The transient simulation includes the k-epsilon turbulence model and 6DOF properties for the cylinder (mass and inertia moments). I get to simulate 5s using a time step of 0.0001s to avoid negative cell volume issues but the results that I obtain don't seem to be correct. The cylinder falls into the water but the wave resultant of the impact doesn't travel to the sides and the cylinder starts to sink although it is 30 times lighter than water. I have also tryed to start with the cylinder fully introduced in water so that the buyoancy lifts it but it just doesn't move. Has anyone experienced any problems related or similar to mines? Hi Enrique,
can you post your solution animation on youtube or vimeo etc.? I am working on a simulation which is quite similar to yours. In my simulation, 4 rigid circles drop into resin. I ended up defining the motion of these circles with a profile file. I tried other things as the 6DOF method with an udf defining the motion through an applied force, but I didn´t succeed with this. Since our simulations share the same principle (object into fluid), I would like to see your solution animation. I as well have rather odd solutions with my simulation model. Greetings |

Hi maccheese,
I finally managed to get satisfactory results, I have the 6DOF solver and I inlcuded two UDF for the density and speed of sound in the water. I still use the setup that I posted but I included a zone around the cylinder which moves along with it and is not deformed. Remeshing and smoothin is made around this zone. I will upload the video to vimeo asap, but it may take me a few days since I'm quite busy at this moment. If you have any specific doubt I will try to help you, but I'm not that expert. Enrique P. __
