Lightbulb Melt pool Width and Bead shape in LPBF

Hi,

I am working on a LPBF simulation, I get the correct melt pool depth but have large discrepancies in melt pool width.

Also, I do not see the semicircular bead after taking a slice along the track length. There are sufficient cells to capture the bead height but still I don't see any projection above the substrate. My simulation has all the 3 modes of heat transfer and is in conduction regime.

If anybody knows how to fix this, please share.

Thanks,
Ankita

Hi!
Have you tried playing around with plume scattering? This might be a good starting point.
Regarding the morphology, in my experience the mesh needs to be fine enough in relation to the spot size to resolve this issue.
What spot size and grid size are you working with?

Thank you for your response.

I will try plume scattering. I used 100 um spot size and 15 um mesh cell size.

Definitely try to decrease the cell size.
Otherwise the influence of one cell's state (liquid/solid) is disproportionally large compared to your spot size.

Sure, will do that.

Can you provide some information on how to use the plume scattering option ? I noticed we have to input a value for 'rfplume' (radius). There is also an attenuation factor of heat source power. Should I specify 50 um as 'rfplume' since my spot size is 100 um ?

imho I think it's best to try different settings for your specific problem-material-combination to validate with your experimental data.
