hello all,

can i make simulation by flow3d for open channel flow if only volume flow rate(m^3/s) existing ?

i want your advice for which one is better to deal with roughness and porose zone simulation flow3d or fluent

thanks

Yes - FLOW-3D specialises in modelling open channel, free-surface flow conditions. If you have a volume flow rate boundary, there are a few ways of specifying the initial flow depth in the channel. There are also a few options for specifying roughness in the model.

so you mean i need also to specify initial depth to complete the simulation.
But if the initial depth is not known, can I complete the simulation?
regarding roughness if there is coarse gravel on channel bed how can i represented it in flow3d ? and kindly could you tell me what experimental parameters i need to represent it either porose media or rough bed

You don’t need to specify a depth. You can just have an initially empty channel and a free flowing outlet condition if that’s what you are interested in.

You can specify different surface roughness values for different components in the model. You can assign a roughness value similar to gravel for the bed.

You could model porous media as well. There are a few ways to account for flow behaviour through porous materials.

It’s hard to be more specific without knowing more details or the desired outcomes from your modelling.
