enGrid terminates upon importing selig airfoil file

Hi enGrid Users,
I am new to enGrid and i have compiled the enGrid version 1.4.0_x64bit. I tried to import the 2d xy selig airfoil data file. But enGrid stops functioning and terminates. I think its a great tool to use for the hybrid 2d & 3d meshes. I would be looking for any useful advice. What about the CAD functionality in the software, this might also add to another important feature for the software. thanks and regards. |

Hello,
could you please post the airfoil file you are trying to import? About the CAD functionality: This would be a lot of work and I am not certain that we can find funding for it. You can, however, use enGrid and Blender together and this should enable you to create fairly complex models. Another thing which is being worked on at the moment is an interface to BRL-CAD. Cheers, Oliver |

Hi Ogloth,
Thanks for your reply, actually i tried different airfoills even the most simplest and popular one NACA0012 and other NACA profiles. See the attached file for the NACA0015 profile. I thought it might be the header syntax in the file but it also didn't work. So i will be looking for your help. thanks and regards. |

Hello,
the file format of your file is not the same which is used on this website: http://www.ae.illinois.edu/m-selig/a..._database.html which is the format enGrid expects (see also attached file). I have tried to catch this error and report it instead of crashing the software ... you can find the fix in the repository on GitHub. If the format is correct, however, the file should import in enGrid 1.4.0 as well. Just importing the Selig file, however, will not get you very far. You probably need to export it to Blender and build a decent model around it. I used to have an import script for Blender as well, but unfortunately this has not been ported to Blender >= 2.5 yet. Cheers, Oliver |

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply, it worked, see the attached file imported with enGrid 1.4.0. I have no experience with Blender, but is it possible if i use CATIA / Proengineer to build farfield around the airfoil. Can this be exported to enGrid in some format. Secondly i am using SU2 CFD solver and i saw that enGrid has an SU2 export option in the Export menu. Is this option really working, when yes then i would like to try this too. thanks and regards. |

Hello,
you can try to export your model as STL file and then import that into enGrid. It would, however, be beneficial to familiarise yourself a little bit with Blender, because it is a very useful tool to build CFD models together with enGrid. About the SU2 export, yes that does really work ;-) I haven't tested it with the latest version of SU2, but I assume that the file format hasn't changed. Cheers, Oliver |
