Is it possible to monitor residuals of specific areas in a region while a solution is being run? Or is it only possible to monitor the residuals of entire regions?

Residuals of different domains can be ploted in the monitor respectively. You can select "Monitor Properties" from the right-click menu on the monitor screen, and then toggle on or off variable residuals you want. Maybe you need to define the specific area as a domain. But I am not sure because I have not found the way to display arbitrary areas' residuals.
