I was running a transient simulation in CFX when my laptop decided to do a worthless windows update which resulted in an auto reboot. I was saving the .trn files at each timestep to run an animation later, and have them all saved in the .dir folder. I'm trying to continue my run by specifying the last .trn file as the initial condition, but this opens a new folder to store the .trn files in now. My understanding is that I cannot just copy the old .trn files into this new folder to animate all timesteps because the final .res file can only read timesteps that were written down for the corresponding run.

Therefore, is there a way to restart the CFX run so as to continue writing the .trn files into the same existing .dir folder that was in being used at the time of the reboot? Thanks.

When you start CFX you can define the temporary directory which CFX runs in, and this is the location CFX puts all the trn files. But I do not think that will help you - the res file it saves at the end is linked to the trn files associated with that run only, so the other trn files in the directory will be ignored.

But a side point: You only need the res file to open the trn files if you have not saved the mesh in the trn files. The default option is to save the mesh in the trn files, in which case you can load the trn files directly in CFD-Post without needing the res file.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, it's a pity that there is no provision to continue the run in the manner I wanted (and I'm sure a lot of other users too).

Yes, I can open the .trn file with the mesh info (saved as a filename_full.trn by default), but I can't append to the rest of the .trn files to build on my animation. Hopefully they put out a new feature to fix the above issue in the future. Thanks again.

If you want to do an animation across one crashed simulation (where you have the full trn files) and another simulation to complete it you can:

1) Do a CFD-Post session file which does the animation over the crashed simulation trn files, saving the frames as files, and then load the second simulation and complete the animation, saving the frames as files. Then you can use something like ffmpeg or any of the other animation tools to generate a new animation using all the frames.

OR

2) Do an animation using the trn files from the first crashed run, and then a second animation from the second simulation run. You will now have two animation files, so use a video editing tool to append the animations to each other and you get a single animation file over the whole thing.

So you do have options to generate the full animation, they just require a bit more work.

Have you read the documentation for the timestep selector? You can add one folder/directory at a time to glue multiple simulations.
