Does anyone have a tutorial or reference to model flow by a river or flow open to the atmosphere ? if so please guide me thanks

Something like described in http://www.bunova.nl/koelwaterlozing.htm In this link you can also find a movie in which the temperature in a river and harbour is given as a function of time. Heat loss through the surface is included.
