Hi

Please could someone explain the difference between PVM and MPICH when running CFX –5.7 in parallel.

I'm assuming both can be used for running parallel jobs. Which one should I use?

Under Linux(UNIX) PVM preferable(but I am not sure about SGI or AIX). Under Windows MPICH is only option.

Hi,

deLuther is probably right, but you should try both (if you can) and judge for yourself. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages.

If PVM will work well under windows, then I will use it everytime(because it much more stable than mpich), but currently it has one greate disadvatage - speed... With each additional machine overal time is increasing. (For instance two machines is slower than one and so on).

Agreed with whatever is said earlier. However, one more thing to be taken care of is not to use MPICH while running network parallel. CFX 5.7 Decumentation explicitly says MPI is reccomonded only for parallel jobs being run on single machine with multiple processors. - NS

Hi,

I disagree with Narasimha's comment that MPICH does not work distributed parallel. It works fine, I use it regularly. It does have some stability problems (as mentioned by deLuther), but as long as the job does not crash (as any properly developed simulation shouldn't) it works just fine.
