Hello,

in the course of simulating the incompressible flow through a translationally periodic element for my bachelor's thesis I have encountered a problem neither me nor my boss could solve.

We are aiming to simulate the flow with initial conditions for speed in z direction and adding interfaces for in- and outlet with translational periodicity.

Using a 3.5 mio element mesh, the problem did not converge but however had no error messages concerning the setup. After substituting a finer mesh (roughly 7 mio elements), there were several errors which we attribute to the new mesh.

The error messages were "no control surfaces have been found for the domain interface" and in another case it was stated that the surfaces of this domain interface did not intersect.
Since all we did was substituting a finer mesh we are strongly convinced there must be something wrong with the new mesh. The new, fine mesh was created in the same manner as the 3.5 mio mesh, though.

Has anybody encountered similar problems before?
I would be extremely grateful for ideas on where to search for errors or on how to achieve a solution with the finer mesh with alterations to both setup and mesh.

Thank you in advance for your help, I will be happy to provide more details if needed.

Where did you create the mesh? ICEM?

The mesh was created in ICEM, with global max element size defined.
There was no refinement besides global smoothing.

Quick thought, did you run the ICEM mesh checker for periodicity? ICEM will fix issues that occur if mesh doesnt line up for that.
