Sponge iron is produced in refractory lined rotary kilns where iron ore (haematite, iron oxide) or pellets made from oxide ore fines, is reduced by the carbon present in the coal. The various reactions are: (a) reduction of the oxide, (b) combustion of carbon to oxide, (c) carbon gasification by dioxide etc. Heat transfer (all three modes), in-compressible flow etc contribute a lot. The rotary kiln is basically a moving bed reactor where the solids (ore/pellet, coal) move from the inlet towards the outlet. The gases flow in the reverse direction.

Wanted a free lancer, preferably a Chemical/Metallurgical engineer, trained in CFD who has experience of writing CFD programs preferably using FORTRAN. The person should be from India for speedy communication/visits. The FVM/FDM is preferred. Constitutive equations/relationships etc will be supplied. The program will have to be validated against process data generated in kilns of various capacities. Payment and other terms will be discussed/negotiated.

I am interested to take a look at it. I am Chemical Engineer and have vast experience in CFD, combustion and heat transfer modeling. However, I am located in USA. If you are still interested, you can send me an email at rajumathconsult@gmail.com.
