I think icem tutorial or manuals for v13 are no avaliable yet. At Ansys customer portal you can find only for version 12 and 12.1.

I'm a beginner so any tutorial will be sufficient.

If you want an older version (but still somewhat relevant), here are the 11.0 tutorials in pdf form.

Hi can some one help me out with the procedure how to convert structured mesh to unstructured mesh. I am currently a masters student doing my project work on Gas turbine NGV and have generated a structured mesh for it. I am now trying to an analysis on unstructured mesh so as to conclude my Thesis.
Can some one help me with the process..

Where have you generated it?

If in ICEM CFD, you can simply right click on premesh and convert to unstructured mesh.

If elsewhere and you have access to ICEM CFD, and it is in one of the supported import formats, you can click on edit to convert it to unstructured.

I have generated the mesh in ICEM CFD. I have made the structured mesh for the NGV profie but i am getting a huge skewness value which is not getting accurate results. Could you help me on the meshing. I can show you the snap shot of the mesh that i have generated. I tell its looks awful.. .. i tried to get some other design topoligy but failed to get a good mesh. Could you help me on this please.

Yes, skewness issues are due to your topology not being advanced enough. Search CFD online for the images I have posted on "Shifted Periodic" topologies.

Dear Mr. Simon,

I am currently running my simulation on Fluent for the Nozzle Guide vane. I have been given the experimental test results which i am trying for my verification of the model. But as i was entering the values into Fluent CFD there were some important doubts that came accross my mind. It would be really helpful if you could guide me. In the boundary condition its asking me to enter the Gauge total pressure ( Which is the total pressure - 101325) . But then it asks me to give the supersonic/Initial gauge pressure.. Is it the static gauge pressure that i have to put.. (Static pressure -101325)

Also in the define drop down list there is a tab for operating conditions. I am confused if i need to keep it zero for operating pressure or should i need to put a value of 101325..

Kindly guide me

I switched for ansys 12.1 to 13.0 and facing the same above problems.

In a post titled "what does the different ANSYS ICEM and ANSYS Workbench? " you had said that "You should think of ANSYS ICEM as an extension of the meshing capabilities in ANSYS Meshing… ......In other words, try the ANSYS Meshing first. If it gets the job done, then it is the easiest tool to use. If you need something extra like structured hexa or interactive mesh editing, you can use ICEM CFD."


In 12.1 i was, doing the same, using the ansys meshing diretly from workbench (by doing tutorials from this pdf file www1.ansys.com/customer/content/documentation/130/cfx_tutr.pdf) and it worked well. Are any such tutorials available for meshing in ansys 13.0 ???

I am facing problems in ansys meshing and would prefer to keep the ICEM CFD as a last option for interactive meshing. Or if there is any other option pls let me know. Thanks.

I guess menus of version 13 are substantially different than v. 12?

No. Certainly the menus are not all different. There may be some differences in some areas. ANSYS Meshing has seen more changes then ICEM CFD. For instance, ANSYS Meshing added Cutcel at 13.0, so there is a new section to the mesh menu for that. They also added a number of controls for Multizone and virtual surfaces... ANSYS Meshing 14.0 added a whole new menu for setting up the order of operations...

ICEM CFD added some controls to certain menus. There were some extra buttons added to the selection tool bar, etc.

Incremental changes.

If you have access to the customer portal (all uses with a valid license do), you can download the "whats new" for each release and see what changed. You can also get the latest training material on the portal.
