Unstructured mesh refinement in ICEM

Hi,
I have a rectangular domain to study a propagating flame (combustion). The problem is the flame itself is expected to propagate spherically, i.e. a flame ball moves within the domain. Initially I tried using a structured grid for it, but I'm unsure whether this is the best way to do it. So I created an unstructured grid instead. The problem is I want to refine the mesh in the region where the flame will propagate, i.e. in the centre of the rectangular box but I don't know how I could achieve this. I've attached a pic of my unstructured mesh. Thanks. |

Hi,
If you are using a structured mesh you can split the one single block for the cube into equal block and then for the six edges of these cube emanating from the center you can use the half cosinus 1 (or 2 just chk) mesh law so that the nodes on these edges are concentrated at the centre. If the half cosinus law is having the nodes grow far apart too early for your taste you can try and create you own setting for the law. If you are using the unstructured mesh, then you can create a density region surrounding the centre of the cube where you can specify tet or hex sizes that you wish solely in that volume region thus ensuring a fine mesh at the centre. Personally I would recommend a structured meshing appraoch. |

My case is 2D. I do the refinement in pre-mesh params ->refinement, and then apply, but when I check the mesh information, the cells do not change.So, I don't know what to do now? Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi,
You may try using the density function to refine the meshes in the place of your interest instead of refining the mesh everywhere. It helps to keep the mesh size small.. |
