Hello,

I’m having some difficulty creating surface geometry from formatted point data. The geometry will represent a small reach of a river and is comprised of point measurements along several cross-sections, shown in the first figure (flow direction is roughly in the +x, gravity acts in the –z direction). The cross-section are connected with straight curves. I created this by importing 3D point measurement from my field data and connecting them with curves. Each cross-section is a single curve concatenated from several small ones. The top surface is the measured water surface and will be modeled with a symmetry condition. The two curves from each cross-section (channel boundary and water surface) are placed into individual parts corresponding to the cross-section (i.e. XS1, XS2, etc.). The difficulty I’m facing now has to do with creating surfaces for the channel boundary (which is a no-slip wall). There are two basic issues:

1. I created a new part to hold the surfaces, called “Wall”. When I create a surface from curves, ICEM also places some curves from the original cross-section into the Wall part as well. The strange thing is that it seems to undo my previous concatenate and break the curve into smaller curves. Is there a way to only place surfaces into a new part and leave the source curves in their original parts?
2. When I try to concatenate the curves again, the final curve goes all over the place. So, I tried to just create a surface from the curves without the concatenate. This doesn’t work, even though the curves completed encompass the area where the surface should go. The second figure tries to demonstrate this. Note that the surface created for the middle section is just a small triangular shape.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Also, my basic strategy may be flawed. So if anyone sees a better way to do this, let me know. Thanks!

If those are 4 curves thru the points in each cross section, you should be able to just create a surface with the loft tool and select all 4 curves at once to create a single surface...

Not sure why it would give you any hassle.

If you can post the original tetin file (before you create surfaces), I would take a quick look for you.

Simon,

Thanks for the suggestion, i hadn't used the loft tool before. Everything seems to be working well for the geometry now. Next, on to the meshing...

Hi guys,

I want to ask a question very similar to the first one in this thread. Itīs about creating surfaces or importing surfaces. Itīs a "mistake" similar to the second picture in first post. When I try import a surface from CATIA (pictures 1,2) I get an incomplete surface "apparently" (picture 3,4). Then, If I try to create it from curves I get other surface but not equal to the initial (picture 5). I think If I have the "incomplete suface" everything is ok too, but I would like to have a good and defined surface. Anyone know about it?

BrolY your answer resolve the first 4 pictures but with the last one I donīt know how to do this. I mean, as you can see in it, If I create the surface in ICEM CFD I got a surface but Itīs not tangent with adjacent surface. So... Is it not possible in ICEM?
