Hello everyone,
I am working in ANSYS Meshing and need to generate a structured hexahedral mesh for a 3D model shaped like an open ring, as shown in the attached image. The geometry resembles a "C" in cross-section. My goal is to achieve a fully structured hexahedral mesh, but I'm having difficulty due to the open shape of the solid. I have tried splitting the geometry and applying mesh controls, but I haven't been able to get the structured mesh I need. I have attached the .wbpj file from ANSYS Workbench along with the geometry so you can see the specific details of the model and the mesh settings I've tried. Could anyone offer suggestions on how to split the domain or configure mesh controls in ANSYS Meshing to obtain a structured mesh for this open ring shape? Any step-by-step guidance or specific advice for this type of geometry would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help. |

At one end, I see a very narrow passage. How does it end? Does it end with an angle (close to 0°) or with a rectangular surface?
In other words: do you have 6 surfaces with 4 corners each? Or do you have 5 surfaces, from which 2 are triangular with only 3 corners? |

Then you ask for something impossible. A fully structured hexahedral mesh requires a cubic topology, i.e. a volume with 8 corners and 6 rectangular surfaces. That is not what you have.
There are 3 options: 1. A way out is to split the geometry such that you end up with smaller volume that each has a cubic topology. This is possible, but the end result will be very bad mesh. That route is an dead end, is my experience. 2. Make a fully unstructed mesh. This technology is invented for a geometry like yours. 3. Make a mix. You can split the geometry and make a structured mesh on the large side, and an unstructured mesh on the thin side. |
