I'm trying to mesh a propeller domain, which is a cylinder with the propeller cut out of it. The file is STEP, I tried x_t and ANSYS won't read that for some reason. The problem is that instead of meshing the domain around the propeller geometry, it is meshing only the propeller. I have done this before and it worked fine, but now it's suddenly doing the opposite of what I want. As far as I can tell, the settings are the same. The main difference is that I'm using Inventor now where I was using SolidWorks, because the licence expired, and I'm waiting to see if the university will provide an updated key.

Here are some images to demonstrate the problem, hopefully they explain a bit better. This:

How many volumes do you have?
It looks like you have one volume of the propellor surrounded by loose surfaces spanning the air, not?
You should have one volume of air with the propellor cut out.
So, better make a solid cilinder, and substract the propeller volume from it. I would recommend Spaceclaim for this.

Perhaps you're right, I did try to use SpaceClaim initially as you suggested, but SpaceClaim refused to import the model, so I used DesignModeller and then imported taht model into SpaceClaim and it worked as inted using the parasolid file. I think the issue is the way Inventor and SolidWorks treat models.

My Spaceclaim allows direct opening of Inventor files like *.ipt and *.iam.
No translation necessary. Did you try that?
If it doesn't eat your files, probably something is wrong with your inventor model.

No, I didn't try that, but I solved the problem using the convoluted method of x_t -> DesignModeller -> SpaceClaim -> Mesh -> Simulation. If it crops up again I will try it, but for now, I have the results I need.

Thank you for the suggestion, I know that it can accept SLDPRT files, didn't think that applied to ipt too.
